About a good cause...

Listening to: Phantom of the Opera soundtrack...
Thinking about: how stressful work is and if it is worth it?

I admire those who work for a good cause, even if it means they don't make much money. They love what they do because they believe what they do will help others. That is probably the reason why I volunteer with the Vancouver Asian Canadian Theatre productions.

Yesterday, I was at a VACT meeting and we were contemplating putting on a production that is costly, but raises awareness to the head-tax issue that has been highly talked about these days. This past week, 5 citizens were paid back from the government to make up for the highly racially discriminating head tax that made Chinese immigrants pay $500 to come to Canada in the early days. The production would bring more awareness to the Vancouver and BC community.

The dilemma lies in where the money will come from. If it is for a good cause, helping Asian-Canadian actors/actresses break out into the theatrical / arts scene, and raising awareness of the head tax issue, it shouldn't be too hard to find sponsors right? But in this day and age where it seems everything is for a good cause and rich, more affluent people are being bombarded with solicitations to donate, how can we differentiate?

I wish I had a lot of time to devote to VACT and the cause to get this production into theatre by July 2007, but will be quite a challenge for someone who already works full time. I wish I was in a different work environment, more flexible, and with a car, so I could be more active. I really do believe VACT can be known to the Vancouver arts community as a fun, serious theatre group. I have met a lot of dedicated actors/actresses, production staff, and volunteers who feel VACT is a foundation for Asian-Canadians trying to pursue a future career in the arts. If only other people can see the same objectives of VACT...
